Staff Guide — Horses of Hoofprint Bay
How staff work in Horses of Hoofprint Bay: stablehands, trainers, and lesson instructors, what they automate, when to hire, and how salaries fit your farm budget.
Staff in Horses of Hoofprint Bay buy back your attention. They do not create new stable slots or skip quest requirements—they automate care, training, and lesson minigames you could do yourself. The right time to hire is when your round is full of chores but your income still comes from riding, competitions, or /farm/boarders-and-lessons/ work you cannot delegate.

Staff roles at a glance
Community documentation and the grindnstrat guide agree on four practical buckets:
| Role | What they do | When they pay off |
|---|---|---|
| Groom (stablehand) | Group hay and water support, mucking, individual grooming on assigned horses | Four or more horses, or any boarders sharing your slots |
| Horse trainer | Arena training on assigned horses within stat caps | You want daily training without playing every course |
| Yearling trainer | Training focused on young stock | Active /horses/breeding-guide/ with pens full of yearlings |
| Lesson instructor | NPC riding lessons on horses you assign | Steady lesson income without posture minigames every round |
Maria (available early) is different: she is a player riding coach, not farm automation. She helps you learn show jumping technique—closer to a tutorial NPC than to Julia’s lesson business.

How hiring unlocks
Hiring flows through the main house. The Steam store page states advanced building stages unlock staff applications; community databases map named workers to main-house levels.
Reported unlock pattern (TMQ Horse Game Database, not second-sourced per employee):
- House level 1 — Laura (groom, very small capacity) and Maria (player instructor).
- House level 2 — Fiete (larger groom), Julia (lesson instructor), Tara (adult horse trainer), Bianca (yearling trainer).
- House level 3 — Lucas (large groom), Meilin and Markus (high-tier adult trainers).
Treat exact horse counts, training ceilings, salaries, and one-time training fees as reported numbers until you verify in your save. The strategic takeaway is unchanged: tier-2 house unlocks the economy trio—bulk care, automated lessons, and trainers.
Grooms: group chores and individual coats
Hoofprint Bay splits care into yard tasks and per-horse tasks (see /guides/horse-care-guide/). You still place hay and water for each stable group from the farm overview unless a groom’s workflow covers assigned horses end-to-end.
Grooms excel when:
- Boarder horses add real mouths that need grooming and grain rules.
- Pasture turnout leaves mud on coats (/horses/personality-traits/ Mud Lover makes this worse).
- You would rather enter a competition day than brush five tails.
Community tables note grooms feed appropriate grain, which matters for Hard Keeper and Easy Keeper traits without micromanaging bowls.

Trainers: stat growth without overtraining
Trainers run arena sessions similar to manual training described in /guides/training-guide/. Community entries claim they avoid overtraining within their skill band—important because pushing exercise past the red warning exhausts horses the next day.
Use adult trainers when:
- Competition prep needs consistent strength/endurance ticks.
- Schooling boarders demand contract stats before their stay ends.
- You own more horses than you can ride each round.
Use Bianca (yearling-focused) when young stock need growth without stealing your main competition horses’ time slots.
Lesson instructor vs doing lessons yourself
Riding lessons are a separate income channel (see /farm/boarders-and-lessons/). You can run posture corrections manually—legs, hands, torso—or assign horses to Julia after the relevant main-house upgrade.
Either way, lesson horses lose strength and endurance and need ordinary training between lesson days. An instructor saves player minutes, not feed or grooming obligations.
Suggested hiring order (analysis)
- Finish arena + parking so income exists (/farm/building-upgrade-order/).
- First groom when group care scales with horse count—often Laura, then Fiete or Lucas after upgrades.
- Trainer when stat grind blocks competitions or schooling boarders, not before basic care is stable.
- Julia when lesson slots are idle because you lack time, not because horses are untrained.
- Premium trainers (reported high daily wages) only when they replace hours you would spend anyway on high-value horses.
Training your employees (reported)
Community staff tables list a one-time training fee for several hires (for example, grooms in the low hundreds and senior trainers above 1,000 in TMQ data). Paying once unlocks their full automation quality—grooms feeding correct grain amounts, trainers respecting overtraining limits. Budget that spike the same day you upgrade the main house, not the day before entry fees are due.
If a hire looks expensive on paper, compare their daily salary to the rounds you would spend manually doing the same tasks. Two extra lesson payments often cover a groom; two avoided schooling boarder failures often cover a mid-tier trainer.
DIY vs delegate: a quick self-check
Ask each round:
- Did I skip training because I was grooming?
- Are boarder contracts failing despite good prestige?
- Am I ignoring lesson requests that need only posture fixes?
If yes, staff are justified. If money is the problem, return to /guides/make-money-guide/ before adding salaries.
Sources and verification
Compiled 2026-11-05 from the Steam store page, grindnstrat guide, TMQ HoHB wiki, and TMQ comparison article. Items marked “reported” come from community guides and were not independently confirmed in-game.
Single-source (TMQ staff table): daily salaries, per-employee horse capacities, training stat caps, and one-time staff training fees. Dual-sourced: role definitions, main-house unlock gating, Julia lesson automation, groom task list (feed/muck/groom).
